Annotation translation: " ... of the inventor of the [Bamum] script." Annotation: " ... des Schrifterfinders." Note: "Brustbild von der Seite." (E-30-0,4). - "Mama's Frau Margarete. Brustbild v.d. Seite. Von den vielen Frauen, die Nzi Mama zugehören, sind einige getauft. Sie haben in das heidnische Gehöfte Neues und Gutes getragen, und der Herr des Besitztums verschliesst sich nicht vor dem, was das Christentum duch seine Frauen wirkt. Gerne hat er seine 3 getauften Frauen um sich und beobachtet mit stiller Freude, was die 'Gottessache' aus den Menschen macht. Eines Tages kommt er zur Missionarin, die die 'besondere Freundin' seiner Margarete ist. 'Na', sagt er, 'ich habe nur einen Wunsch!' Das ist seltsam, denn der Neger hat sonst der Wünsche viele!! 'Was ist denn das nun für ein Wunsch?' so meine Frage. 'Dass alle meine Frauen sich taufen lassen.' 'Warum möchtest du das?' Da sagt der Mann strahlenden Auges: 'Seitdem 3 meiner Frauen getauft sind, ist in unserm Gehöft ein ganz anderes Leben, als früher. Man streitet nicht mehr, man lässt sich von mir viel eher etwas sagen und so sind in unserem Hause ein grosser Friede, frohe Arbeitslust und echte Fröhlichkeit eingekehrt.' Das ist ein Zeugnis, das ein Heide seinen getauften Frauen ausstellt, ein Zeugnis das sich hören lässt u. das den Missionaren Mut gibt, in ihrer, oft schwierigen Arbeit fortzufahren." Many wives belong to Nzi Mama. Some have been baptised. They have carried the new and the good into that non-christian compound, and the lord of that estate has an open heart for the things which christianity has caused through the lives of these women. He likes having his three christian wives about him, and observes with quiet joy what God s matter makes out of human beings. One day he came to the missionary who is the especial friend of his Margarete. Mother , he said, I have just one desire. That is strange - most Africans have many desires! What is it you want? I asked. I want all my wives to be baptised . Why do you want that? Then he said, with sparkling eyes, Since my three wives have been baptised, life in our compound has become quite different from before. We do not quarrel any more. We let people say things to us we don t want to hear much more than we did previously. And so in our house there is great peace, we work happily and know real joy. That is a witness to the Gospel from an unbaptised husband of christian wives. It gives us missionaries courage to carry on with our work, difficult though it often is. (A.
