Description
Front of postcard depicts image of the Tavern of Mt. Tamalpais. Title transcribed from front of the postcard, which is printed with the following text: "United States Weather Bureau and Tavern, at summit (1/2 mile high) of Mt. Tamalpais, California." Publisher information is listed as, "Britton & Rey, San Francisco 535." The Tavern of Tamalpais was a combination hotel and restaurant which opened in 1896, and was sometimes referred to as Summit Tavern or Tamalpais Tavern. The Tavern burned to the ground in a 1923 fire, but was rebuilt and reopened in 1924. The Tavern continued to operate until 1950, when it was razed by the Marin Municipal Water District.
