View of the Golden Gate taken from Black Point. Battery is visible in the foreground, with 2 cannons, a pile of cannon balls, and 2 soldiers. A goat grazes at left and the bay is visible beyond.
United States Army built twelve-gun, two battery fortifications at Point San Jose Military Reservation (known as Black Point) in 1864. Known as East and West Batteries, Point San Jose. Guns mounted on wooden platforms behind brick and earth walls.
