Description
A phosphate deposit mining site, atoll of Makatea
Workers collecting the phosphated sand
Wooden footbridges allow to circulate through féo (columns of limestone of coral origin) which remain after we removed the sand.
Comment : The atoll of Makatea was for a long time an economic driver for the French Polynesia region because of its large phosphate deposits. These were mined by the CFPO (Compagnie Française des Phosphates de l'Océanie) from 1917 until depletion of resources in 1966.
