Photograph article dated February 20, 1963 reads, "Two Los Angeles sportsmen, Maurice Machris and Tom Knudsen, leave for Kenya, Africa, on an extensive safari today. The purpose behind the trip is to secure record - sized elephants for the L.A. County Museum African exhibit. At present there are no elephants in the Museum collection. The whole trip, Machris explained, will take about three and a half months, and will be a fully-outfitted safari. Several members of the Los Angeles Adventurers Club will accompany the two sportsmen for the purpose of recording the hunt on color film. The group will collect other species of animal life to be placed with the elephant exhibit in the museum. This will also include native plants and rocks. The Elephants will be skinned and rough-tanned in Africa. The final taxidermy work and exhibit-mounting will be done at the museum in Los Angeles." Pictured from left are Dr. Fred Truxal, Maurice Machis, George Ross and Charles Cobun.
