Originally named Boulder Dam, it was renamed Hoover Dam in 1946. Shown here are 2 diagrams made by the Bureau of Reclamation of the Department of the Interior showing the measures that had to be taken to deal with the water coming down the Colorado River during the time of construction on the dam. A temporary dam was built up-river, and 4 tunnels, each 50 feet in diameter, plus several smaller tunnels were used to divert the water around the construction site.
