An unidentified assistant (L-R), hunches over a rifle and walks carefully through an obstacle course in a forested area. He leads a group of survival school students; Brian Schwarz, Marilyn Chandler, Ron Venn, Jack Madeley, Allen Mons, and Joel Turner behind him. The students all hold rifles. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
