Description
Original Foothill Electronics Museum accession worksheet reads: "Variable condenser seated in a glass tank, with knob and scale on top. Large spacing for high voltage. Oil was likely put in tank to increase the voltage rating. Note shorting switch on top. Oil being a different dielectric than air would change the capacitance." Patents on label No. 2486 and 3998. There is no manufacturer indicated. According to the University of Queensland, Australia's site, "This is a standard variable capacitor using interleaved metal plates, one set stators and one set rotors. Rotation of the shaft by the knob moves the stator plates in and out of the rotor plates. The capacitor scale is in the old units of Jars, varying from 0.05 to 0.95 jars. One Jar is about 200 picofarads."
