African gazelles graze in an area of Lion Country Safari in Irvine. A raised hut, possibly for use by park staff, is present in the background. In 1967, South African and British entrepreneurs created an animal park in Florida where visitors could experience a safari-type adventure here in the United States. Eventually other parks, located in Irvine, Grand Prairie (Texas), Stockbridge (Georgia), and Ohio were opened. The 500-acre Irvine park, shown here, existed from 1970 until 1984. After the park was closed, the site became Irvine Meadows, and more recently Verizon Amphitheater, a popular venue for musical performances.
