Photograph caption dated September 25, 1964 reads, "Veteran fliers - Four of the five surviving pilots from the first globe-circling flight 40 years ago are shown with other dignitaries after they were honored at an Explorers' Club dinner in Beverly Hills Wednesday. They are, from left, Former Air Force 2nd Lt. Henry A. Ogden, Maj. Gen. Leigh Wade (Ret.), Brig. Gen. Erik H. Nelson and, at right, Former Lt. John Harding Jr. Also pictured are, center, commentator and world traveler Lowell Thomas, Lt. Gen. J. H. Doolittle (Ret.), who received the Explorer's Medal, and Donald W. Douglas, Jr., [sic] who designed and built the planes which made flight." The DT-2 aircraft used was designed by Donald W. Douglas Sr. who founded the Douglas Aircraft Company. He remained president until his retirement in 1957, at which point his son Donald W. Douglas, Jr. took over. Douglas Sr. remained on the board until his death in 1981.
