Title supplied by cataloger. McKim Ranch belonged to Joseph Harmon McKim (1852-1945), a Kentucky native who moved to California in 1877 or 1878 and settled in Pomona. About 1901 he became interested in the Imperial Valley, where he bought some land in conjunction with his siblings. McKim bought 1200 acres, his half-brother bought 200 acres, and his half-sister bought another 120 acres. At that time, the McKim Ranch consisted of over 1500 acres, although by 1950, it had dwindled down to 1000 acres. Joseph McKim spent some time in San Diego, but ultimately returned to his ranch in the last few years of his life. The patriarch of Imperial Valley pioneers died at the age of 93. View of a home located on the McKim Ranch, east of Imperial Valley. It shows what appears to be a single-story home, with several thin wooden columns holding up the overhanging roof, which covers a makeshift wrap-around porch. A curious row of slats along the front of the roof leads to an opening at the top - possibly a storage area. A small outhouse can be seen to the right of the home, next to a small tree. It is unclear if this was Joseph McKim's residence.
