Description
Photograph caption dated December 9, 1963 reads, "The posthumous award of the Air Medal for Lt. Richard L. Hatlestad, USAF, was presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard G. Hatlestad, 14908 Mayael St., Sepulveda, by Lt. Col. Alterio Gallerani, commander of the 1342nd Photographic Group at Lookout Mountain Air Force Station in Los Angeles. The citation accompanying the medal cited Lt. Hatlestad for meritorious achievement while participating as an aircraft crew member in aerial flights over Viet Nam from June, 1962, to September, 1962. Lt. Hatlestad was killed last April 12 when a troop transport crashed in Thailand."
