Arbuckle was one of the major stars of the silent screen when he was charged with the rape and resulting death of an obscure 25-year-old starlet named Virginia Rappe at a drunken party on Labor Day weekend in 1921. The incident occurred at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. When it was all over, Arbuckle was acquitted in his third trial.
