Overview from 36th Street and Carolina Place, facing northeast. In this photo, it appears that rooftops for apartment buildings outnumber rooftops for single-family homes; and although somewhat smoggy, the Vincent Thomas Bridge can be seen in the distance. In front of the bridge are the cranes of the Evergreen Shipping Company. The Vincent Thomas Bridge was built in the early 60's. Prior to the bridge, one had to take a ferry to and from Long Beach across the channel. That channel has been filled in, with piers built on the landfills to service the container shipping industry. The old ferry building on the San Pedro side still stands today and functions as The Los Angeles Maritime Museum. Photograph dated June 2001.
