Description
In October 1972, English Professor Dick Barnes organized an experimental event featuring his play, titled The Death of Buster Quinine. Billed as "a sacramental farce and fire opera," the play took place in a rock quarry east of the Pomona College campus and featured giant puppets, original poetry and jazz, fireworks, light sculptures and a flaming jagannath equipped with whirling Mexican castillos, much of it built with the assistance of arts faculty and students, including such future luminaries as James Turrell (Class of 1965) and Peter Shelton (Class of 1973). Barnes would go on to restage the production three more times over the years. Part 1: Much of the recording is music, with sounds from the audience heard throughout. The actors can occasionally be heard, along with loud bangs. Part 2: Indiscernible actors, along with music and pyrotechnics until the play ends at 17:00. The rest of the recording consists of conversations among the crew, Barnes, and others as they strike the set. Audio Notes: In part 1 levels are low after 00:02:30, except for loud bangs and screams from 00:10:00-30 and last 3 minutes. There is no audio/extremely low audio from 5:14-5:48, and no audio from 7:58-8:56. In part 2 levels vary throughout, inaudible at times. Note on box: Property of Stephen C. Withers[?]
