Description
Flames work their way through ships moored along the Sacramento River’s western shore in this August 28, 1932 photograph. Of the eight stern-wheelers, two barges and two tugboats destroyed, fewer than half were covered by insurance. The greatest damage was done to the legendary River Lines Company, which lost 2,400 tons of freight. Without knowing for certain, speculation was that the fire started as a result of excess amounts of oil waste or gasoline in the engine room of the freighter Valetta which had sat idle for months.
