Description
Note: "Kg. Ndj. (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6). Note translation: K[in]g Ndj[oya s] brother Nzi Ndab, head and shoulders from the front. Nzi Ndab is an insignificant brother of the chief. He has no function at court, and only comes now and again to greet his royal brother. He is a very handsome and very polite African who, out of sheer politeness in conversation with a European, often loses his words for minutes at a time and can only stutter. A little girl who was [sic] his future wife attended the mission school, and this king s brother paid careful attention to see that she attended school regularly. He was proud to have a woman in his compound who had tasted from the wisdom of the white man. The cap which this gentleman is wearing in this picture is a beautifully embroidered rider s cap, a piece of clothing for which a Bamum man will invest an irresponsibly large amount of money. (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, Commentaries on Slides from Bamum, E-30-0,6. K 331.).
