Description
Steve begins the interview briefly talking about the basic gimmicks and insider jokes he uses in his novels. For the majority of the interview, Connie and Steve’s conversation meanders between the novel’s themes and Steve’s life ranging from his love of jazz to his secular humanist non-fiction work. For example, Steve talks about including the mundane aspects of real life, like forgetting one’s wallet or misplacing one’s keys, to inject the realities of life into his imaginary worlds, something he suggests that, as great as she was, Agathe Christi never did. In addition, Steve discusses how he plots his books using rough sketches to start a novel but he primarily ad-libs the plot as he drafts a novel to better mirror real life. Steve also discusses his non-fiction writing on religion, humanism, and the utter importance that he sees, regardless of belief, in being a moral individual. Steve also briefly talks about his love of jazz and some of his jazz compositions like “The Gravy Waltz.”
