Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 Educated at Compton High with classmate Duke Snider, Pete Rozelle got his start as the Rams' publicity director in 1952. He later became the team's general manager before being elevated to NFL commissioner in 1960, at age 33, on the recommendation of Rams owner Dan Reeves. A compromise choice, Rozelle became one of the most influential sports commissioners; he oversaw the NFL-AFL merger, inaugurated the Super Bowl and Monday Night Football, and generated ever-richer television deals. Three years after his death, Sporting News magazine named him the most powerful person in sports in the 20th Century. Photo dated: April 21, 1964.
