Description
Image of a firefighter's exempt membership certificate from the Village of Watkins, New York, made out in manuscript to George H. Waite of the Rescue Hook and Ladder Company, and dated January 21, 1903; surrounded by eight vignettes depicting a goddess holding a spear and surrounded by mining and industrial equipment; a firefighter with a speaking trumpet climbing onto a building; a wounded firefighter at the bottom of a ladder being helped by a female nurse and other firemen; side views of a steam fire engine and a manual fire engine; a hook and ladder truck and hose carriage on the street before a building; a firefighter bringing a rescued child down a ladder towards her mother; and firefighters climbing a ladder to bring a hose up to the roof of a building; the certificate has an orange embossed seal of the Village of Watkins at lower center.

Watkins, NY Fire Department and is admitted and entitled to all the honors benefits and privileges of an Exempt Fireman Witness our hands and the Seal of the [blank] affixed this twenty first day of January A.D. 1903 [blank] Sec'y. George D. Norman Geo. D. Norman Chief Engineer. Edward A. Gillett Clerk."--text of certificate, printed and handwritten.
