Description
Raw footage from a show titled "Los Angeles History Project" that aired on KCET in Los Angeles, from 1988 through 1990. Each of the three seasons consisted of four episodes. Mae Wong was born in Chinatown in 1901 as one of nine children. She grew up helping in her father's store and remembers the old Chinese traditions as well as life in Los Angeles in the old and new Chinatown. She has been an activist all her life and was a founder of the Mei Wah girls club in Los Angeles in 1931. Mae Wong shares her memories of the founding of the new Chinatown and her brother Peter Soo Hoo's involvement in this project. Interviewer Suellen Cheng was a board member of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California and founding curator for the Chinese American Museum.
