Photograph of "Borax" Smith's mine, "Old Borate", at Harmony, Death Vallley, (later near Furnace Creek Inn, Death Valley National Monument), ca.1890. Various buildings and equipment of the mining operation are situated in a rough line up the slope of the mountain. Smith's house is on top of the hill right behind. According to some sources, the "Old Borate" mine was located at Calico Mountains near Yermo, California
