Charles Handy article on management by consent, and issues concerning dissent, in the workplace. Handy begins the article describing what is meant by an organization of consent, defining it as a 'psychological contract' between individual and organization that is implicit. He proceeds to assert that the distinction between the organization of consent and the traditional hierarchy is that authority in the former is granted by those below, whereas in the hierarchical state authority is granted by those above. Handy concludes the essay by stating that organizations built on an organization of consent may appear democratic and in line with modern ideals, but, in reality, may have several troublesome consequences chiefly relating to the contradiction between the individual’s goals and collective corporate objectives.
