There was an extra long line of voters waiting at the polling place in the 39th Street School on November 4, 1952, because only two voting machines were in operation. 629 registered voters in two precincts were scheduled to vote there, thus the pileup. At noon, about half of the voters had cast their ballots but some had to wait for an hour and a half.
