Description
Lucy Hollister Brown, a wealthy widow, financed her young brother, William Wells Hollister, and helped him drive cattle and sheep from Ohio to California in 1853. Upon their arrival, she served as his ranch manager as he became a millionaire though land development. The relationship between brother and sister was forever strained after he married and having children. Upon the reading of his will and learning she would receive nothing, Lucy reportedly remarked, "No, No, this is not right. He can't give everything away."
