This is side A of the fifth tape of recordings of a course taught by Peter Drucker in 1978. This was recorded on February 21. Drucker talks about how being in the hotel business can make companies good in other areas like laundry and baking. The group discusses how General Motors sells automobile accessories to companies like Chrysler. Some people seem to think this would be counterproductive, but Drucker explains why it is not and that it happens in other businesses as well. A student with banking experience talks briefly about correspondent banks and selling bank services. Drucker explains the importance of having good manners, and how sometimes it can be the cheapest way to solve a problem. He also says that taxes, energy costs and freight costs can make up a third of manufacturing costs. Drucker talks about customer discrimination, the introductory stage of a product, and when telephones were a luxury item. He also talks about finding a market niche for specialty products that are not fulfilling a need like clock radios or electric carving knives.
