Description
Plates in: Album of photographs, pg. 29. Shows statue of Civil War soldier on pedestal. Inscribed: "Erected to the memory of our soldier dead, G.A.R." Sculpted Grand Army badge visible on south side. 2009-3275. John Baldwin arrived in California by 1874. Was active as a photographer in several cities, including Sacramento. In Sacramento operated out of a gallery on J Street in the 1880's. Monument erected by local Grand Army posts on the east side of G.A.R. plot in City Cemetery. Statue stands on Folsom white granite pedestal, figure sculpted in Chicago of white bronze, all standing on concrete base. Twenty foot monument represents Union private at parade rest. Dedicated on Sept. 9th, 1889. Also have negative no.: 25, 365 (4x5 in.)
