Using the doomed Central Avenue bridge over the Arroyo Verdugo in Glendale for a scientific test, engineer's are shown piling heavy steel ingots on the structure to see what strength their work had in resisting destruction. A burden equal to the weight of 176 passenger automobiles was loaded onto the bridge and the only deviation from the normal position was a quarter-inch depression in the span's center.
