In 1836 Fathers Caret and Laval, of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jeasus and Mary landed in the Tahiti Archipelago, Oceania, and founded the mission which became a Vicariate Apostolic. The centenary of the foundation was solemnly commemorated with a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving in the open air. More than 5,000 were present at the ceremony, representing all sections of the Vicariate.
