Description
Boxing greatness poses for this November 22, 1935, photograph, taken at the L Street Arena at 223 L Street. Persons identified, from left to right, are James Braddock's manager, Joe Gould, Max Baer, Tommy "Tomboy" Romero, James Braddock, referee Fred Bottaro, Braddock's sparring partner, Jack McCarthy, and an unidentified person. The evening included an exhibition bout between Braddock and McCarthy, seven undercard bouts, and the ringside jest and antics of Sacramento-resident and ex-heavyweight champion Baer. The partisan Sacramento Bee described Baer as creating "more furor, excitement, applause and curiosity than did the man who licked him, and the latter was the leading man of the ring show." Braddock had defeated Baer in March of the same year in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
