Description
Detailed, close-up view of bottom left corner of a noob ncoos (seed pillow), needlework squares placed under the head or on the body of the deceased at a HMong burial. Red, yellow, dark green, white, and black fabrics are appliquéd using a traditional needlework technique involving folding fabrics to create a lined border (ntug). The finished border, also known as thaiv ntug or "covering with a border," acts as a seal of protection for the wearer or bearer of the textile and the symbolic power of the embroidered motif. Handwritten inscription on mat board beneath photograph reads, "Noob ncoos lab - "seed pillow" or funeral square 1983." Numbering on verso inconsistent. Notes on verso read: "HMong: Detail of Modern Needlework Piece #2, Lewis Judy, *HMO.4091.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, upper left verso]; Photo 11 noobncoos detail border bands [handwritten red ink, upper left verso]" Numbering inconsistent on verso. Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
