A man identified as Fred Roberts wearing a cowboy hat and sitting on a horse in Malibu, California.
This is a copy negative (a photograph of another photograph). "Fred Roberts who Papa Joe bought 30 acres"--text of note that accompanied negative when it was received. Title devised by cataloger; date approximated by cataloger based on general style of image. This photograph is part of a group of copy negatives identified as "Fred and Florence Roberts, Rancho Rumba, Malibu." Fred L. Roberts (died 1976) was a grocer who founded Roberts Public Market in Santa Monica; he and his wife, Florence Roberts, owned a ranch in Solstice Canyon, Malibu (see Los Angeles Times, "Funeral Services to Be Held for Businessman Fred Roberts, August 7, 1976, page d8).
