Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
George Allen (1918-1990) had a very extensive career as a football coach with teams that included the University of Michigan, Morningside College, Whittier College, Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers and Long Beach State. He was an early innovator in the use of sophisticated playbooks, well-organized drafts, use of special teams, and daring trades for veterans over new players. In 1998 he was inducted to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2002 he was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Allen died from ventricular fibrillation in his home on December 31, 1990, at the age of 72.; Bobby Cox (1934-2003) began his college football career at the University of Washington before transferring to Minnesota and was a Heisman Trophy candidate during his senior season. He appeared on the cover of the Nov. 4, 1957 Sports Illustrated magazine next to a caption that read, "Bobby Cox of Minnesota: Best College Quarterback." He was drafted in the 4th round by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1957 NFL draft, but did not make the team's final roster. Cox played in the Canadian Football League, and in 1960 played briefly with the NFL Boston Patriots. Following football he had a very successful career in business and founded the multi-million dollar travel agency, World Travel, Inc. On October 3, 2003 Cox died of pancreatic cancer in Hennepin County, Minnesota, after slipping into a coma. He was 69 years old.
Photograph caption dated September 16, 1958, "George Allen of Encino, football coach and originator of numerous grid innovations, explains principle of his overweight practice football to quarterback Bobby Cox. See Innocent Bystander for details."
