Description
Smith's Ranch on the northeastern edge of Banning and border of Beaumont became Smith's Station when stages began running through San Gorgonio Pass, thus becoming the first stop on the stage line through the pass. In 1884, Smith's Station was sold an a three-story hotel was built and named the Highland Home. Palmer and Halliday of Santa Ana bought the Highland Home Hotel around 1888, and planted a large acreage of fruit trees. In 1921 the hotel was sold and renamed the Highland Spring Hotel. It is seen here after it was refurbished with an addition built on both its right and left sides. It has since burned down.
