Description
Augustin Castaneda Sr. was born in Cavite, Philippines, and served in the Philippine Scouts, later transferring to the US Navy. Castaneda, a second-class seaman at the time, was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked amd witnessed the loss of fellow crewmen, a trauma that haunted him for years. His unit was sent to Corregidor, Philippines, and fell to the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war and was held in captivity for 13 months until he was finally released in April 1943.
