Citing a need to comply with the Alien Land Law ("Alien Land Act"), the letter notes that people of Japanese descent have been observed on leaseholder Petty's property, and demands that they vacate the property if there they are not Petty's employees, or that Petty advise Maria de los Reyes D. de Francis in writing if they are employed in his farm operations. This collection includes records of land leased to Japanese American tenants in years leading up to World War II. As such, they provide a view of California in years of the Alien Land Laws, attitudes toward Japanese Americans, and the impact of World War II.
