Description
In the background of the train is the 30,000 gallon oil tank. Oil, instead of wood or coal, was used in the early 1900's since it was in good supply. Pictured to the right is a whaleback tender, where the oil is burned. This type of tender was distinctive to the Southern Pacific Railroad.
