Cancelled lease, originally granting Ichiro Sugasawara approximately 20 acres of the 349-acre tract of Rancho San Pedro in Los Angeles County, dated July 1, 1937, with handwritten annotations indicating first that 10 acres were to be given to another tenant on December 17, 1941, and then that the lease was cancelled on April 22, 1942 for the reason: "tenant evacuated per U.S. Gov't." This collection includes records of land leased to Japanese American tenants in years leading up to World War II. As such, they provide a view of California in years of the Alien Land Laws, attitudes toward Japanese Americans, and the impact of World War II.
