Description
Fedora for a Spacecraft - Standing on scaffolding atop an Apollo test vehicle at the DOD Parachute Test Facility near El Centro, Calif., officials of Northrop Corporation's Ventura Division inspect installation of Earth Landing System prior to attaching apex cover on the spacecraft. This installation is very similar to that which will be used on manned Apollo space flights. Two of the three main parachute pack are visible. In flight, landing system sequence begins with jettisoning of apex cover and mortar deployment of two drogue parachutes (not visible). Main parachutes are extracted by small pilot parachutes.
