Description
This photo was apparently taken during the Decoration Day celebration. The marker on the right is a temporary wooden monument, placed by the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic (Union Civil War veterans), in honor of "the unknown dead." A permanent Civil War monument was built nearby in 1915, and still stands. On the left is the monument for Isaac Williams (1822-1870), one of the first settlers in the Gospel Swamp area. It is still in place.
