Description
Annotations/Markings: Painting signed "竹石道人" with seal at left edge. Inscribed "The 'Bamboo & Rock' Man of Tao / has painted only a rock! / He has not added a single bamboo / to complement this cloud-shaped marvel. / Monumental, frank and honest, / proud between Heaven and earth, / This is a portrait of the Man of Tao himself / as he appears once he is drunk" (trans. Stephen Addiss) at lower right edge. Inscription is signed "Gengaku" with one seal at middle of right edge preceding inscription and two seals following inscriber's signature.
Medium: ink on silk
Biography/History: Artist also known as 長町竹石
Acquisition: Addiss-Seo Nanga Collection; on long-term loan to the Ruth and Sherman Lee Institute for Japanese Art.
Funding: Digitization funded by an Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Leadership Grant (LG 30-02-0260-02) awarded to the University of California, Merced Library.
