Format
1 hanging scroll; 37 x 47 cm. Signed with two seals at left edge below center. Inscription consists of five "Songs of the Fisherman" by the famous semi-legendary fisherman-recluse, Zhang Zhihe (c.742-c.782) (1) Before Xisai Mountain, white egrets fly;/ in flowing waters of Peach Blossom Spring, the perch are plump!/ With blue bamboo hat,/ and green straw coat,/ in driving wind or drizzling rain, no need to go home. (2) At the fishing terrace, an old fisherman with sackcloth as his robe,/ and two by two or three by three, tiny fishing boats;/ He can relax his oar,/ knows how to ride the flow,/ the Yangzi River's whitehead waves will never cause him woe. 3) In a bay along Cha Stream, there's an old fisherman:/ a tiny boat serves as his home, traveling east and west/ There may be snow,/ or wind along the shore:/ he puts on robe of lotus leaf and never sighs, "I'm poor!" 4) Along Pine River, hut fit for crabs, yet the master's full of joy:/ Water-oat to eat with watercress broth fine to share with you!/ As maple leaves fall,/ and reed blossoms grow old,/ drunken he sleeps in his fishing boat, unaware of cold. 5) Above the lake of verdant grass the moon has just grown full:/ The Baling fisherman sings "oar songs" over and over again./ With special casting reel,/ and skiff with blunt-nosed prow/ he takes his joy in wind and waves--no need to become an immortal! ink on paper
