Description
Annotations/Markings: Signed "閬苑" (Rōen) with two seals at left edge below center. One-line inscription at upper right corner dated 1831 and signed by Chikuden with one seal preceding inscription and two seals following signature. Inscription reads "It has been more than 3,000 years / Since the banquet at Yao-ch'ih; / Her rosy cheeks have not faded / But the sea has changed to land" (trans. Stephen Addiss).

Biography/History: Artist also known as 林閬苑. An eccentric Edo period artist who studied with Fukuhara Gogaku.
Acquisition: Ruth and Sherman Lee Institute for Japanese Art Permanent Collection. Ex Addiss-Seo Nanga Collection. Gift of Barbara Porterfield.
Funding: Digitization funded by an Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Leadership Grant (LG 30-02-0260-02) awarded to the University of California, Merced Library.
