Description
Interior view of the Tavern of Tamalpais, situated atop Mt. Tamalpais, circa 1930. This is the second Tavern of Tamalpais, built in 1924 after a fire destroyed the first in 1923. This tavern remained in operation until World War II. The Tavern was famous throughout the Bay Area for its fine dining room and comfortable accommodations. The Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railroad ran from 1896 until 1929, from downtown Mill Valley, California to near the summit of Mt. Tamalpais, with a second line descending the West side of Mt. Tamalpais to Muir Woods beginning in 1907.
