Description
The streets in the foreground are part of the original layout of Modesto, platted in 1870. The orientation was centered on the railroad line whose tracks did not run in a true north-south direction. Five Points is the visible junction of five streets and avenues between the original orientation and the modern layout of Modesto. McHenry Avenue is the conspicuous main road seen from Five Points, continuing north, until it is barely observable at the top of the photograph. The large white rectangular building in the foreground is the Stanislaus County Free Library. Directly across can be seen the peaked roofline of the Victorian Italianate style home built by Matilda and Robert McHenry in 1883.
