Description
This Gold Star Ceremony was held to honor the mothers of Japanese American soldiers from the Sacramento area and Florin who died during WWII. Those honored included Mrs. Yoneo Hayashi, Mrs. Tsuru Nakagaki (mother of Masaru Nakagaki), Mrs. Asa Abe, Mrs. Tsune Tahara, Mrs. Tane Akiyama, Mrs. Tsuneo Sakai, and James Takeuchi accepted for the Takeuchi family. The Japanese American soliders died while serving with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in Italy and France. The event began with dinner at the Wakanoura Restaurant. Then the attendees were escorted over to the Fox Senator Theater where the mothers were awarded the Gold Star pin. The ceremony was followed by the opening of the movie "Go For Broke." Speakers included Lt. Gov. Goodwin Knight, State Senator Desmond, Major General Curtis D. O'Sullivan of the California National Guard, Mayor Geisreiter, and Darold DeCoe, Sr (past VFW national commander). Gold Star Lapel Buttons are presented to surviving spouses, parents and next of kin of United States military service members who die while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected disability.
