Photograph of Horace Mann School, ca. 1895. Horace Mann was San Jose's first "big" school building. Built in 1868 at a cost of $22,000, it was heavily damaged in the 1906 earthquake and had to be demolished. The current Horace Mann school building is the 3rd on the site.
