Description
This map, circa 1900, shows the Marin County route taken by the narrow gauge railroad, first known as the North Pacific Coast Railroad. The formal opening of the railroad was on January 7th, 1875. The North Pacific Coast Railroad carried redwood lumber, local dairy and agricultural products, express cars and passengers. It operated almost 93 miles of track which extended from a pier in Sausalito (connecting the line via ferry to San Francisco), northwest to Cazadero. In 1902, it was sold to the North Shore Railroad Company, then in 1907 became part of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.
