Description
Pictured here is the school color guard in 1938 from San Rafael Military Academy in San Rafael, California. In 1925 a local businessman, A.L. Stewart, bought the Mt. Tamalpais Military Academy and renamed it the San Rafael Military Academy. Dormitories on Mare Island were purchased from the U.S. government and floated to San Rafael on barges. The administration building was erected in 1926, and a swimming pool was added in 1930. A gymnasium was built in 1932, the same year that the football field was prepared. When Mr. Stewart died in 1950, a nonprofit organization was formed to continue the school. In 1959, the Episcopal Diocese of California began running the school. Despite efforts to keep the school open by loyal alumni and parents, it closed its doors in June, 1971. The property is now home to Marin Academy, a private co-ed high school.
