Description
Portrait of Count Nikolai Rezanov, ca. 1806. Maria de la Concepcion Marcela Arguello was born in the Presidio of San Francisco on February 19, 1791. She was the daughter of Don Jose Arguello, who was then serving as the Commandante of the Presidio. Concepcion Arguello is associated in California history with the story of her engagement in 1806 when she was 15 to the Russian Count Nikolai Rezanov. Rezanov died in Siberia when returning to Russia to obtain permission for the marriage. Concepcion Arguello later entered the convent and was given the religious name of Sister Mary Dominica. The California novelist Gertrude Atherton wrote a book about this romance titled Rezanov and Dona Concha. From Santa Clara Historic Museum, Los Fundadores Room
